Hilarious Sweet Hilarious

December 24, 2006 at 3:32 pm,

I haven’t been home in San Diego for some 5-6 months now, so having not been regularly exposed to the antics of my parents for that time, it’s all the more amusing when I come home and realize just how fantastically hilarious their behavior is (and thus a better explanation for why I am how I am).

For example, as I’m working on my laptop in the living room, my dad has fallen asleep on the couch watching TV, as he often does. This time however, he’s fallen asleep watching a Chargers game, and since they’re doing pretty well this season he’s really, really into the game — when conscious. So, this is what I’ve been hearing for the past hour:

snoring.
snoring.
sniff.
“GO GO GO ALL THE WAY GOOOOO YEAAAAAAH! WOOO!”
shifting. lips smacking.
snoring.

Ah, the holidays.

Another related anecdote: my dad CONSTANTLY falls asleep while watching TV or a movie. This is especially prevalent at movie theaters, what with the darkened room and comfortable chairs. My favorite memory of my father’s cinematic narcilepsy is when I was about thirteen, we were watching Titanic, and my dad had fallen asleep during the particularly lovey scenes between Leo and Kate. Later, about fifteen minutes into the mayhem of the ship sinking, my dad jolts awake. The first thing he sees is one of the giant smokestacks from the ship crashing into a crowd of people desparately trying to swim away, and he bursts out laughing. I’m pretty sure the people sitting behind us were getting ready to break the Silence Is Golden rule to bust out their cell phones and call Child Services.
