My dad, trying to convince me to go to this Vietnamese-American convention in Washington, D.C.:
Dad: “You know, there will be a lot of nice girls there.”
Me: “Uh huh.”
Dad: “It won’t be hard to find them, there will be a lot of them there.”
Me: “Uh.. huh.”
Dad: “You know, a lot of my friends have daughters your age.”
Me: “Khyuh-huh” (whatever ‘uh huh’ combined with a snorted laugh sounds like)
Dad: “I’m serious! They very beautiful.”
Me: “I know, I know!” (insert uncontrollable giggling)
Dad: “You know, but you never try! You have to try if you want to get one!”
Cue laughter usually not heard until after my fourth shot of vodka.
Dad: “There’s this one, Nina, she plays music! And she very beautiful.”
